2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid: Choosing the Right Trim (2025)

The all-new 2024 Grand Highlander Hybrid takes everything you love about the Highlander Hybrid and stretches it 6.5 inches, creating a spacious interior with ample cargo space, even with all three rows in place.

The Grand Highlander Hybrid comes in two primary flavors. The standard XLE and Limited Hybrid models feature a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and electric motor (or motors when ordering all-wheel drive) good for 245 horsepower. That’s just 20 horsepower less than the non-hybrid Highlander, but with vastly better fuel economy, touting 37 mpg city for the hybrid versus 21 mpg for the gas-only model.

The Max Limited and Max Platinum trims combine a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor setup for a combined 362 hp. Fuel economy does dip a bit, but the combined fuel economy remains a few MPG better than the non-hybrid Grand Highlander.

Only the XLE offers the choice between front-wheel or all-wheel drive (AWD); the latter is standard on all other trims. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) replaces the non-hybrid’s 8-speed automatic.

The competitor set is a bit smaller for the Grand Highlander Hybrid, as rivals like the Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, and Chevrolet Traverse don’t offer a hybrid option. The Mazda CX-90 PHEV, Ford Explorer Hybrid, the smaller Kia Sorento Hybrid, and the larger Toyota Sequoia (which shares the Tundra’s i-Force Max hybrid engine standard) are the only options.

What’s New:

The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid debuts with an additional 6.5 inches added to its length; it’s also wider and taller, making it easy to fit up to eight passengers and all their luggage.

Our Recommendation:

The Toyota Grand Highlander Limited trim strikes a nice balance with regard to price, features, and appearance. You can add the Platinum’s panoramic moonroof and 360-degree monitor, making the Limited nearly as plush.

2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid XLE: $44,670 (FWD), $46,270 (AWD)

The first of four Grand Highlander Hybrid trims, the XLE is the only one powered by its front wheels with the option of AWD. It’s pretty basic transportation and the best choice for those pinching pennies.

Toyota doesn’t skimp regarding safety, making the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 driver-assist suite standard. The group includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.

TSS 3.0 includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, road sign recognition, and Proactive Driving Assist. This new feature provides subtle braking into curves and steering assist when needed.

Rounding out the XLE’s assist systems are Hill Start Assist, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Short of the hybrid badges, there’s not a lot to distinguish the hybrid XLE from its non-hybrid twin. It rolls on handsome 18-inch alloy wheels and features LED headlights, LED taillights, heated power side mirrors, and a power liftgate.

The wiper blades rest on de-icers that help keep the wiper blades from icing over, while the front door glass and windshield have extra lamination to keep exterior noise at bay.

Silver-painted roof rails, a rear backup camera washer, and Toyota’s Smart Key keyless entry, which permits unlocking the doors without removing the fob from your purse or pocket, are all standard.

Moving to the XLE cabin, we find 3-row seating featuring a heated 10-way power driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar support, a heated 8-way power front passenger seat, second-row captain’s chairs, and a 60/40-split folding third-row seat.

Those needing more passenger space can opt for a 60/40-split folding, sliding, and reclining second row, which increases capacity to eight passengers.

Toyota’s SofTex simulated leather upholstery covers all three rows.

The XLE has a 3-zone automatic climate control system with a second-row control panel, one-touch up/down power windows, rear window retractable sunshades, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, and analog gauges separated by a 7-inch color multi-information display.

A 12.3-inch touchscreen sits atop the center console and features wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and Bluetooth. It’s connected to a 6-speaker AM/FM radio.

Toyota’s Connected Services apps turn your phone into a mini control panel, offering services like cloud-based navigation, vehicle status reports, remote start, service reminders, and emergency services.

With Toyota’s Digital Key, you can access and start your Grand Highlander Hybrid using your phone. You can also share the code with family or friends, permitting them to drive your car.

The XLE’s only options are a panoramic moonroof and a second-row bench seat.

With the $1,335 delivery charge (in most states), the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid XLE costs $46,005. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to $868. See 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid XLE models for sale near you
